Whiskey, Meat Butter, Cashmere Sweatpants
I thought about it, and here are the best things about fall.
The return of my Fall wardrobe: I never thought that, for three months out of the year, I would have to be in the position to have to choose my clothes based on whether or not they would show me sweating profusely, but that becomes a very real factor during a New York City summer. I know. So gross. And besides that, it’s not too much fun and it really cramps my creativity. But Fall dressing is my jam, people. Scarves and leather jackets and jeans and boots and blazers and oh my god, I finally feel like myself. Want to look put together? Layering is the secret, and Fall is the sweet spot for layering…cool enough for that blouse/cardigan/scarf/army jacket combo, but warm enough that I don’t have to cover up my undeniably genius work with a winter coat. From a fashion standpoint, I wish it were Fall forever.
Manhattans: The first real cocktail that I fell in love with, which gets set aside April through September in favor of gin Gimlets and Rose, returns to heavy rotation. Going to college in Tennessee, I developed my serious love affair with whiskey, but I didn’t discover Manhattans until I started bartending, and I never looked back. My first Manhattan of the Fall always makes me feel like everything is as it should be.
Short ribs on the menu: No joke, I think if I had to choose one thing to eat for the rest of my life, it would be short ribs, or as I like to affectionately call them, “meat butter”. They start to make their appearance when the cold weather hits, and I’m powerless. If short ribs are an option, no one needs to ask me what I’m going to have. Throw in some mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts and a bottle of Cote Rotie, and I’ll see you later.
Cashmere sweatpants: I shouldn’t really have to say anything about this, but time me, people…when I come home, front door to cashmere sweatpants is less than a minute.
Having a hot toddy before bed: Hot water + lemon + honey + bourbon = nighty night. Pretty much the only upside to being sick, which I am a lot once the weather turns cold. I’m having one right now.
Drinking hot coffee again: Dear iced coffee, I’m not really breaking up with you, I just need to see other people for a while. You know no one can replace your ability to make me feel human when I have to drag my sweaty, tired ass around New York City in the summertime. We had a totally hot, er…cold affair. You really did it for me. Right now, though, I just need a partner that will keep my hands and the rest of me warm through my Fall bench-sitting, park-strolling, and city-wandering. And that partner’s name is a large soy latte. Don’t worry, we’ve been through this before, and you know that just like a Gemini ex-boyfriend, I’ll be back again in the Spring.
